BABY FACE

Voici ce que je cherche depuis très longtemps : des démos d'un obscur groupe , Baby Face, réunissant Ritchie Blackmore à la guitare , Phil Lynott à la basse et Ian Paice à la batterie. Paul Rodgers fut même approché pour assurer les vocaux.Datant de 72 , Blackmore estima que ces démos ne le satisfaisaient pas et le groupe , à peine constitué , disparut dans la nature.

Many years later, a greatest hits package called "Ritchie Blackmore's Best Tracks" included a track called "GUITAR JOB" performed by "the mysterious band BABY FACE" featuring Phil Lynott playing bass, and listed as a 1972 recording. In addition to PHIL, the band was rumoured to consist of IAN PAICE, PAUL RODGERS and RITCHIE BLACKMORE. Little more is known about BABY FACE, although Ritchie Blackmore has confirmed the short existence of the band.

A couple of years ago RITCHIE BLACKMORE gave an interview to a Greek magazine, and among the questions he was asked, beyond the main story, was about his work with Philip Lynott. He confirmed that they had made some demos, and they named themselves BABY FACE, but after a couple of days playing together at someone's home, they decided not to work together, because they didn't like the results. He also mentioned that he did not feel the demo's were high enough quality to ever release.

Maybe some day Blackmore will release an all emcompassing box set that will include those demos. I mean if they thought enough to put "studio chatter" on the anniversery discs, why not some raw demos of two great talents working together.

Phil Lynott avait déclaré que 5 chansons avait été misent au point, Blackmore lui trouve que cela ressemble trop à Hendrix...

Jon Lord avait de la sympathie envers Phil, il a bien sur été au courant de ce projet, Ian Paice est lui un peu plus réservé envers le bassiste,il trouve que Lynott manque d'expérience, trop jeune et qu'il avait du mal a apprendre une chanson qu'il n'a pas composer lui -même..toutefois Paice reconnu une extraordinaire présence scénique de Phil

Dans la série "Quand deux leaders s'affrontent" il est intéressant quand même de lire dans le dernier Classic Rock consacré au grand Phil que ce dernier, leader dans l'âme, ne désirait pas recevoir d'ordre de la part de Blackmore. Leur association a duré une semaine...

une jam correspondant peut-être à ce projet Lynott/Blackmore ?

Dans une interview, Derek Lawrence cite la reprise de Dying to Live de Johnny Winter :

The early 70's 'Babyface ' sessions undertaken by Ritchie (along with Ian Paice) and Phil Lynott have entered Purple mythology over the years. Ritchie is reported as saying two or three tracks were worked up, while Phil in the early 80's stated as many as five songs were in various stages of development. Did you have memory of these sessions, and what (if anything) was consigned to tape? Roy Davies

The three of them did record at The Music Centre at Wembley (November 22nd 1971 - Simon R.). I have no idea of how many or what happened to the tracks. I seem to recall Ritchie telling me that they cut a track by Johny Winters called "Dying To Live".
