GRAND SLAM

Grand Slam est le type de groupe qui n'a pas eu de chance . Après la dissolution de Lizzy en 83 , Phil Lynott , dans un premier temps , monte un groupe avec John Sykes , The Three Musketeers , avec qui il tournera principalement en Scandinavie , contrée où Thin Lizzy était très populaire . John Sykes , "convoqué" par David Coverdale pour intégrer Whitesnake , délaisse le projet entamé par Lynott .
Ce dernier ne désarme pas et recrute un guitariste talentueux répondant au nom de Laurence Archer qui fit partie d' un groupe qui , à mon sens, avait un potentiel énorme , Stampede mais qui n' a pas confirmé même au travers de ses deux albums , The Official Bootleg-Live et Hurricane Town. Ensemble , ils forment Grand Slam bientôt renforcé par Mark Stanway (Magnum) , Doish Nagle aux keyboards et Robbie Brennan à la batterie .
Le groupe écume les clubs et entame une tournée UK intensive sans pouvoir obtenir de deal discographique .
Affecté par cet insuccès , Lynott stoppe tout net l'aventure et se réfugie dans la consommation de drogues de plus en plus dures. Ce sera le commencement de la fin .

Mark Stanway & Laurence Archer (original Grand Slam founder members) have got back together and formed a brand new hand- picked ‘pedigree’ band for live shows and the recording of a brand new Grand Slam album for 2016. The new Grand Slam website is under construction and will be ‘up & running’ very shortly: The website address is grandslamband.co.uk and there is also: facebook.com/grandslamofficial which is already up & running .
The band will be playing a full show of original Grand Slam favourites such as ‘Nineteen’ - ‘Sisters of Mercy’ – ‘Crime Rate’ – Military Man as well as selected Thin Lizzy Classics including Cold Sweat – Sarah – Parisienne Walkways – Boys Are back In Town and selected Phil Lynott Solo songs.

WageR are local a five piece melodic hard rock band formally managed by the late great soul legend Edwin Starr. Think along the lines of Toto, Queen, Whitesnake, Van Halen..... to name but a few. The set of songs WageR perform are not 3 minute, fast and furious "pop ditties". They are all epic rock songs given the full grandiose production you would expect to see in any world class stadium or arena anywhere in the world. Hailing from the Midlands in the UK, WageR are Wayne Hughes (Vocals). Alan Bell (Guitar & backing vocals). Nic Smith (Keyboards). Rich Bell (Bass guitar & Backing vocals) and Brett Jordan (Drums & backing vocals). Since WageR formed in 2002 they have performed well in excess of 500 live shows throughout the midlands and around the UK.

quel lineup en tout cas, un mélange THIN LIZZY/WHITESNAKE/UFO (3 groupes que j'apprécie)

On sait pertinemment pourquoi ça n'est jamais allé très loin. Il y a des circonstances dont il faut tenir compte. Tout allait mal pour Lynott. Voir le bouquin de Mark Putterford.

Sinon, je possède des live dont ce Glasgow Kiss enregistré le 30 octobre 1984 que j'écoutais hier soir, concert bien connu des bootleggers. Il y avait ceci de bons titres comme Nineteen et Harlem mais ça n'avait pas l'excellence d'un Lizzy. Par contre si apparemment, une deuxième chance leur est accordée de pouvoir se lancer dans un processus de composition en vue d'un album, là, j'accours à grandes enjambées. Car le line up annoncé peut prétendre à nous proposer des choses sympas. D'ici là, il y a du chemin à parcourir.

HARLEM, j'adore ce titre, un des meilleurs de Phil hors LIZZY, un titre transpirant d'émotions

There’s a string of live dates planned for June, to be announced on the under-construction grandslamband.co.uk. But how they did arrive at the resurrection idea and how will it go without one of the co-founders? That’s what I asked Stanway.

Says Mark:

“I was approached by Johannes Lindstrom, one of the main organizers of the huge Sweden Rock Festival, and asked if I would be interested in putting GRAND SLAM back together for an appearance at the festival in June this year. I got in touch and spoke with Laurence Archer, and he was well up for it. I then contacted Micky Barker who has always been one of my favorite drummers, and he was well up for it, too. I thought about bass players and obviously it had to be a very good one, especially as it would be all of Phil’s bass parts etcetera, so I called my good friend Neil Murray, and again he was also right up for it. This left a singer!

My first thought was another close friend and immensely talented Pat McManus, but he had far too many commitments with his own band, although he would have loved to have done it, This left me one choice and that was my Swedish friend Stefan Berggren. I have been asked why I didn’t approach Robbie Brennan, but he, by all accounts, had not been playing regularly, and for a drummer that is not good, so I didn’t call him. I did try to get hold of Brian Downey, though, who was really GRAND SLAM’s original drummer, but he had semi-retired. As for [guitarist] Doishe [Nagle], he was impossible to track down; all numbers I had and were given for him were all unobtainable.

J'ai pensé en premier à l'immense Pat McManus mais il avait beaucoup trop d'engagements à respecter mais il aurait bien voulu en être. Il me restait une personne à choisir et ce fut mon pote suédois Stefan Berggren. On m'a demandé pourquoi je n'avais pas approché Robbie Brennan mais selon les dires de certains, il ne joue plus régulièrement et donc pour batteur qui n'est pas très bon, je ne l'ai pas appelé. J'ai vraiment essayé de contacter Brian Downey qui était le premier batteur de Grand Slam mais il est quasiment à la retraite. Et comme guitariste, il lui était impossible de localiser Doishe Nagle. En fait, tous les titres avaient été un peu faits en fonction de lui.

With regards to playing without Phil… Well, it just could not ever be the same, but out of respect and indeed the effort put in especially by myself and Laurence with writing all the songs with Phil, it seemed to justify the reason for doing it. QUEEN will never be the same without Freddie but that doesn’t mean to say the rest of the guys can’t continue with their band.”

Concernant le fait de jouer sans Phil eh bien, cela ne pouvait pas être la même chose mais sans lui manquer de respect Laurence et moi étions partie prenante pour écrire les chansons avec Phil par conséquent, nous avons estimé que cette reformation était justifiée. Queen ne sera jamais les mêmes sans Freddie mais cela ne veut pas dire que les survivants ne peuvent pas continuer avec leur groupe."

Mark Stanway: It is with regret that we have to announce that tomorrows' GRAND SLAM show at The Brook in Southampton is officially cancelled!! due to circumstances beyond our control. This show will be re-scheduled for some time later in the year, but full refunds will be given by the Brook Box office for any tickets purchased already. Our apologies again and hopefully see as many of you as possible tonight at the Robin in Bilston.

Phil and Robin had been writing together for the new Thin Lizzy album when they performed Nineteen. This was the day Phil decided to publicize the reformation of Thin Lizzy with Robin George and Brian Downey. As the booking for this Christmas show was last minute there was no time to make an official announcement but Phil intended to go to the press as soon as the Christmas holiday was over. Tragically, the rest is history.

Phil et Robin avaient écrit ensemble pour le nouvel album Thin Lizzy quand ils ont exécuté dix-neuf. Ce fut le jour Phil a décidé de faire connaître la réforme de Thin Lizzy avec Robin George et Brian Downey. Comme la réservation pour ce spectacle de Noël était au dernier moment il n'y avait pas de temps pour faire une annonce officielle, mais Phil voulait aller à la presse dès que les vacances de Noël était terminée. Tragiquement, le reste est de l'histoire.

Eh oui....Je possède Nineteen en version maxi-45T et en double 45T avec en bonus une version live de Whiskey In The Jar enregistrée avec Midge Ure à la guitare.

Le groupe s'est reformé autour de Mark Stanway, Laurence Archer, Dave Boyce, Mike Dyer et Benji Reid. Des infos seront communiquées ultérieurement.

Selon Laurence Archer, ça ne devrait plus trop tarder. En effet, le groupe a pris le chemin du studio pour enregistrer des titres composés il y a de cela un certain temps. :

It’s only been 30 years, but I’m on my way to the studios to make history by finally recording the songs we wrote all that time ago and give them the proper platform for people to be able to enjoy along side the never heard new and old material
