J'ai lu il n'y a pas encore si longtemps des commentaires indiquant que Toto était un groupe de musiciens talentueux mais qui ne faisait que de la "variétoche" ou "variétés de grande consommation", etc, etc. Je n'étais déjà, pas d'accord avec ce constat. Je le suis encore moins après l'écoute de "Falling in Between". Il faut ne les avoir entendu qu'à la radio pour oser dire ce genre de chose. Après un album de reprises qui a un peu laissé de nombreux fans sur leur faim, les Californiens nous reviennent donc avec 10 nouvelles compos (11 pour les japonais), toutes aussi diverses les unes que les autres tant dans les genres abordés, que dans les textes. Mieux, ils nous reviennent en emmenant dans leur tourbillon deux vieux compères (invité : Joseph Williams qui pousse 2-3 refrains sur "Bottom Of Your Soul") et le 3ème frère Porcaro (Steve) qui nous balance effets claviers et synthés plein les mirettes comme au bon vieux temps, d'où le titre de ce commentaire. Le groupe acceuille bras ouverts un certain Greg Phillinganes (Eric Clapton, Richard Marx, tournées de Michael Jackson, et j'en passe !!!) qui officie aux claviers aux côtés de David Paich. Il chante aussi à l'occasion. Et quelle voix il a ! Voici donc Toto avec 4 voix différentes (Kimball, Lukather, Paich et Phillinganes) qui se partagent intelligemment leur organe tout le long de l'album. Parfois 3 voix sur la même piste !!! Au programme donc pour ce 18ème album : rock progressif, jazz, hard, rock, ballades (comme d'hab), pop 80's, funk, fusion, gospel. Côté textes, le groupe a bien mûri depuis leur premier album : addiction, sexe, drogue, jeux, amour (comme d'hab), religions, conflits, victimes des guerres et autres catastrophes, MP3, guerre en Iraq, bref, la vie sur Terre...
